Turtle UnlimitedMission StatementWe, the Management and Staff of Gangga Island Resort & Spa, are very aware of the plight of the marine turtles in North Sulawesi and the archipelago of Gangga/Bangka. There is a very real possibility of extinction for these beautiful animals.As a result of such concerns, we are delighted to announce that we have joined forces with Turtle Unlimited, a group of nature lovers whose main aim is to re-populate Bali's coastline with this beautiful but endangered species. We have also adopted Turtle Unlimited's "Mission and Objectives" policy. We feel sure that protecting the Marine Turtle will contribute to the positive image that North Sulawesi has around the globe. In no way will we ever interfere in the traditions, the culture or religion of the indigenous and local populations. As with all our undertakings, it is always our determination to foster the very best relations with the government, local authorities, and the community. Our Conservation ActivitiesBREEDINGWe collect eggs from the markets, return them to suitable hatching grounds and hatch them under ideal conditions. RELEASE We nurse the new hatchlings for a few weeks in the safety of captivity before releasing them to their natural environment. NURTURE We give misplaced and sick turtles a new home, caring for them and helping them to rebuild their health and strength, and return them to the wild when appropriate. EDUCATION With local and international bodies, we develop educational programs for the children of our villages. This will help reduce the trade in artifacts which are made from endangered marine animals. TOURIST ATTRACTION It is the dream of Turtle Unlimited to develop a marine park in the Gangga and Bangka archipelago, 50% of which will be devoted to Marine Turtles, and 50% to the marine life in the waters around Gangga. This will have the added benefit of creating exciting employment opportunities for the community.
About Turtle Unlimited Turtle Unlimited is a non profit-making organization. All funds raised are automatically reinvested in our conservation and educational pursuits. It is our wish to give our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see these lonely wanderers of the oceans in nature and not in wild animal books under the section: "Extinct" Gangga Island Resort's turtle project is supported by Peter & Beate Lange (Fotofish). |
